As Mark mentioned in one of his comments, Bowling Green, Jr., the son of Nancy Potter Green, died in the Civil War. Here is a link to a site with pictures of his grave in Marietta, Georgia.
Mark, you're making me look bad with all this research you're doing! But thank you, nonetheless. And how amazing would it be to find a letter of condolence from the President! A long shot, surely, but let us know!

These are great writings. Between Leslie and Mark we are finding out lots of information on the Potter side of the family. All very interesting.

I have received a copy of Bowling Green Jr.'s service record from the National Archives. Bowling Green Jr. was 5'11" tall, had dark eyes and black hair and had a fair complexion. He was a farmer in Petersburg, IL. before he joined the Union Army on Aug. 27, 1862 at Peoria, IL. His enlistment was for a period of three years. He did indeed die at General Hospital in Kingston, GA. on Aug, 17, 1864 of wounds received at The Battle of Peach Tree Creek on July 19, 1864. According to the records he was last paid on Oct. 31, 1863 a sum of $25.00 and he also received clothing from the U.S. Army valued at $36.86.
Thank You for your service to this country Bowling Green Jr. May you rest in peace.
Interesting to know.
